Paisley’s Halloween Parade
with Ariel Killick
Cuireadh Dhuibh! You’re Invited!
Tha cuireadh agus cothrom sònraichte aig luchd Fhèis Phàislig a bhith nam pàirt chudromach den Phairèid airson Fèis Shamhna Phàislig 2016, agus an 4mh bliadhna aig Stàit Neo-Eismileach Sonais a’ leasachadh na h-obrach seo ann am Pàislig.
As participants in the incredible success of one of Scotland’s newest Fèisean, you’re warmly invited to take up a special opportunity through Fèis Phàislig to form an important part of this year’s Paisley Halloween Parade, and Stàit Neo-Eisimileach Sonais / Independent State of Happiness’ 4th consecutive year developing this important Gaelic work in Paisley.
Is e amas na h-obrach seo caochladh chothroman a chruthachadh, a’ gabhail a-steach ciùil, dannsa, dràma, ealain ghraifìtì, obair-shnaidhidh, fuaigheal, dèanamh culaidhean & taic riochdachaidh, a bhitheas innteannach dhan iomadh aoise, gnè, buidhnean coimhearsnachd is òigridh anns na h-ealain com-pàirteach, a chuireas taic ri cleachdadh gnìomhach cànain, a’ solaradh dòighean a’ bharrachd do dhaoine a’ Ghàidhlig a chluinntinn is a chleachdadh, agus a’ cur taic ri cleachdadh agus faicsinneachd a’ chànain ann an co-theagsaichean poblach.
The premise of this work is to create a variety of opportunities, including music, dance, drama, graffiti art, crafting/wicker work, sewing, costume making & production support, that can engage a wide range of ages, genders, community and youth groups in participative art, supporting active language use, providing enhanced ways of broadening access and engagement opportunities with Gaelic, as well as normalising its use and presence in public contexts.
Seo sàr-chothrom airson cur ri ìomhaigh Fhèis Phàislig agus na Gàidhlig ann am Pàislig & Rinn Friù cuideachd, is cudromach gus i a neartachadh is taic a thoirt gus am bi cothroman mar seo maireannach airson cloinne, òigridh agus coimhearsnachd na sgìre anns an àm ri teachd.
This is also a fantastic opportunity to raise the profile of Fèis Phàislig and the Gaelic language in Paisley & Renfrewshire, and important for strengthening and supporting the future continuation of such opportunities for children, young people and your local community.
There are two sections allocated for the Fèis Phàislig community – Lantern-Bearers and the Cìrèin Cròin – Nessie. Whilst the Cìrèin Cròin is for those of a more dramatic bent, due to the nature of parade work, any script learning will not be onerous. The Lantern-Bearing Group however can encompass a group song in Gaelic or as with last year, very short bilingual scriptlines with added dramatisation, but there are also possibilities to build in dance and instrument playing as well – Ariel Killick is experienced in integrating all of these elements and it is guaranteed to be an exciting night, with Gaelic at its core.
Needless to say, it will also support the Paisley 2021 City of Culture bid. Renfrewshire Council is unique in Scotland for its support for broadening the opportunities for integrating Gaelic into its participative public arts and culture events, and whether it wins the 2021 bid or not, the legacy of this work will go on to further support the roll-out of similar Community Participative Bilingual Street Theatre & Spectacle events to communities across Scotland.
Two young performers from the first parade in 2014 have already progressed to paid, professional gigs as Stilt Performers this year, and further such opportunities may also arise in future, including specialist parade production support and costume-making. If you are a competent sewer and confident in straight-stitch and meticulous pinning, or a more experienced sewer and interested in exploring your creativity in a Gaelic-speaking context, please do get in touch. If you have a very large living room or conservatory and are up for hosting a low-tech making/rehearsal night, we have very simple Paisley 2021 flag-fitting (see image) to do which is both low stress and great for banter, using your Gaelic, getting to know others in your community and perhaps a song and story as well!
All it takes is a quick email to arielkillickartist@gmail.com, filling out your details below, is tòisichidh an dàna-thuras – and the adventure begins!
